Becoming energy efficient, or using less energy for the same services, is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to reduce energy use. By reducing our energy use, consumers save money and reduce carbon emissions, making it one of many climate change solutions. Between the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), federal legislation passed in 2022, and the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), a state act passed in 2021, several tax credits and rebates are available for energy efficiency and electrification for residents in our county. Low and Medium Income (LMI) residents can often receive higher incentives. This includes tax credits for weatherization, renewable energy, battery systems, electric vehicles, and rebates for electric appliances.

This year, the Environmental Defenders has been awarded a grant from McHenry County’s Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnerships Program to inform and educate McHenry County residents about the various incentives and rebates they can combine and utilize through IRA and CEJA to improve their energy efficiency and transition to cleaner forms of energy. Over the next year, the Defenders will host various free virtual and in-person informational sessions regarding these incentives.
