Scholarships and Internships

The Environmental Defenders is proud to offer the Alice and Bill Howenstine Scholarship of 2026. This year, we are opening our application to both high school and college students. The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is offering a scholarship of $2,000 for three outstanding high school/college students planning to pursue a career related to the fields of environment, conservation and sustainability.

Summer Internship of 2026

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, a dedicated advocate for environmental action and education, is excited to announce its upcoming internship.

The Environmental Defenders are currently seeking candidates for our summer paid internship program. This opportunity is open to individuals who have completed their sophomore year of college and are pursuing a career in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field, as well as those interested in non-profit work.

This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience within a grassroots non-profit organization. Interns will collaborate closely with our six action teams on a range of environmental projects, gaining insight into the operations and impact of our organization.
