PFAS Detections in Groundwater and Your Drinking Water Supplies Our Speaker for March 5 is Amy Gahala, a hydrologist who has worked for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) since 2011. Amy is the Project Manager for the network of groundwater monitoring wells and stream gages established throughout McHenry County.

Her recent publications include a focus on per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water resources. PFAS are referred to as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the environment, making them extremely persistent. PFAS are a confirmed carcinogen and have associations with adverse health effects. McHenry County Planning and Development, worked with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), to detect the presence of PFAS at selected monitoring wells from the McHenry County Groundwater Monitoring Well Network. Amy will share the results with us during her presentation. For more information visit: https://www.usgs.gov/staff-profiles/amy-m-gahala
