Beginning in April, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County’s Water & Natural Resources Protection Action Team and the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development have scheduled a series of Friday BMP Talks and Tours that showcase some of the exciting Best Management Practices (BMPs) being implemented in McHenry County. The events will be held monthly on Friday afternoons, to make attending them convenient for staff of municipalities, townships, school districts, park districts, libraries, schools and churches, as well as the general public.
To improve the resiliency of our communities and sustainably manage resources, it is becoming increasingly important to implement the BMPs showcased in these workshops. Join us to see these inspiring projects in action and learn from the experts how they can be successfully implemented in your communities. To kick off the series Doug Renkosik, Director of Operations and Maintenance at Huntley Community School District 158, will demonstrate the sustainable facilities management actions they are implementing at the school district. These are practical actions that benefit the school district, the community, the environment, and their bottom line. Doug will share how they have successfully implemented energy efficiency improvements, produced their own renewable energy by installing solar farms, use Sensible Salting practices that maintain safety in winter while reducing water pollution, banned the use of toxic coal tar based blacktop sealants, and are producing their own non-toxic cleaning products on-site. These are sensible, achievable best management practices that can be implemented at your buildings, facilities, and businesses.
This first workshop will be held at the Huntley High School auditorium from 2-4 pm on Friday, April 8. The workshop will feature a fascinating presentation by Mr. Renkosik followed by hands-on stations where participants can learn from the facilities staff who implement the practices and see the equipment they use.
