The Transportation Action Team promotes the development and implementation of policies and professional practices for reducing the use of fossil fuel vehicles.

Our team’s mission includes expansion of bike and pedestrian trails, and increasing use of zero emission vehicles and mass transit, furthering the Defenders’ mission to preserve and protect the environment in McHenry County. The Team also follows legislative bills on the State level, keeping the Defenders membership informed of the most significant ones related to transportation so that they may contact their representatives to express their views.

The Team encourages the public to use eco-friendly transportation options, including public transportation, carpooling, bicycling, and alternative means for commuting and running errands. It also connects with County school districts on bike safety initiatives for kids and on opportunities to procure grants for electric buses. Additionally, it advocates for new or improved road construction to incorporate bike paths/lanes and for increased public transportation options, such as more bus routes, especially in the east-west corridor.

In order to meet its goals, the Team organizes and participates in special programs, such as a County wide “bike to work day,” through cosponsoring projects with other advocacy groups, by presenting or tabling at related events, and by bringing green transportation issues before local and county governments.

The Defenders and the McHenry County Bicycle Advocates have advocated for Complete Streets for several years at MDOT and IDOT meetings and by getting signatures on petitions.

“Complete Streets integrates people and place in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of our transportation networks. The Coalition promotes the development and implementation of policies and professional practices that ensure streets are safe for people of all ages and abilities, balance the needs of different modes, and support local land uses, economies, cultures, and natural environments.”
