Please email Barb if you are interested in volunteering with us. We are always looking for more volunteers for recycling drives and our Styrofoam sheds.
The Recycling Action Team coordinates county-wide recycling drives throughout the year. Our recycling drives support an Illinois statute to recycle electronics, as well as batteries, lightbulbs, Styrofoam and textiles. In addition, this team exclusively funds and manages the Styrofoam Collection Program at our drop-off locations in Algonquin, Crystal Lake and Woodstock.

Styrofoam Drop Off Guidelines

All Styrofoam is not the same. Styrofoam needs to be sorted through, broken into smaller pieces and put into large plastic bags. Sorting involves checking for sponge, foam and other material not accepted. Styrofoam with tape, labels, glue or any other materials stuck to it require our volunteers to spend time, often in very unpleasant weather, removing them, rather than preparing them to be sent on to become new products. Please take a good look at the pictures below of items we cannot accept.

In order to be properly recycled, Styrofoam must be in pristine condition. Please see below:

Styrofoam can NOT have:

  • Tape, labels, glue, or any other materials stuck to it
  • Food condiments or waste stuck to it

It is also important to note that Styrofoam is different than other foam (i.e. soft foam packing blocks, foam sheets, etc.). We are unable to accept and recycle other foam products at this time.

Please ensure that any foam you drop off is clean and true Styrofoam.

Thank you!
