Lan is an ecologist and Pam a land use planner. For over 20 years they were principals and owners of a Chicago area environmental consulting firm specializing in environmental impact assessment and public involvement.\nIn 2004\, Lan and Pam sold their business to three senior employees and began the journey into the non-profit world. Since then\, EJC has brought organizations and individuals together in coalition\, working to address global climate change\, reduce the use of fossil fuels\, promote environmental sustainability and support the development of renewable energy.\n\nEJC was the lead organizer of the 2012 and 2013 Bioneers conferences held at UIC and Roosevelt University. They were the the motivating forces behind the Chicago Clean Power Ordinance that led to the closure of the Fisk and Crawford coal plants. DESCRIPTION:Topics To Discuss:\nGift giving is a warm and loving tradition that goes on steroids during the winter holidays. Along with gifts comes gift wrapping. In Japan\, it is said that giving a gift is like wrapping one’s heart. There\, the concept of wrapping plays a central role in the spiritual and cultural aspects of life. This aesthetic is reflected in the role of gift giving. Objects are wrapped as a kind of pledge that the contents are protected from impurities. Gift wrapping is not an end in itself but a means by which to convey the love and thought that goes into the act of giving. \nOne style of gift wrapping in Japan employs the use of furoshiki. Furoshiki is a multi-purpose carry all created from a square piece of material. Fashioning soft wrappings from large squares of colorfully patterned cloth is employed to wrap and carry objects of all shapes and sizes. The convenience of the furoshiki lies in its adaptability since it has no definite shape as does a bag. It can adapt to fit whatever you put in it – large or small\, round or square\, soft or rigid. \nPlease join us for a very special meeting of Green Drinks where\, after some hands-on learning you will be able to take home your very own furoshiki and a new skill that you can use to become just a little more “green.” All are welcome and materials will be provided. \nAbout the speaker:\nSue Jensen\, former art teacher\, Environmental Defenders of McHenry County board member and recycling drive veteran volunteer is very fond of this style of gift wrapping. It is so appealing because in addition to being unique and beautiful\, the material is reusable\, washable and a fantastic way to create less waste. Come see them speak about their sustainable practices at Green Drinks in October.\n\nTopics To Discuss:\n-Restoration of former gravel quarry and grounds to native plants and trees.\n-Construction of a highly energy efficient building and brewery\, incorporating geothermal technology and a new construction product.\n-Ongoing focus of energy conservation in all of the company’s operations has been a focus for the past 19 years of operation.\n-Maintaining and managing the restored prairie vegetation using traditional techniques.\n-Implementation of composting in back of property\, followed by building a small-scale vermiculture farm.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nMike Kainz\, age 56\, is the founding brewmaster and co-owner of Wild Onion Brewery in Lake Barrington\, IL. Graduated with a BA from Denison University in 1987\, double majoring in French and Economics. Mike spent his junior year in college studying in Paris\, France\, where he learned to appreciate all the amazing styles and flavors of beer that have been brewed in Europe for centuries. Upon returning to the States in 1986\, Mike began home brewing out of necessity to recreate those full-bodied styles of beer-the craft beer revolution was in its infancy at that point\, with few choices of beer styles available to consumers at that point.\nMike joined the Peace Corps after college\, working as an agriculture volunteer in Morocco. He was tasked with converting a 2 1/2 acre lot to a functioning small-scale farm on the grounds of an orphanage in the town of Taroudant in southern Morocco. This experience led to his lifelong passion of sustainable gardening and composting.\nTogether with his family\, Mike founded Wild Onion Brewery in 1996 in Lake Barrington. The original brewery was located in a leased warehouse two blocks away from its current location on Pepper Road. Mike brewed the beer\, while brothers Pat and John delivered to local bars and stores. DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate 13 years of McHenry County Green Drinks!\n\n\n\n\nPresentation Overview:\nThe McHenry County Division of Transportation (MCDOT) and City of Woodstock will discuss roundabouts at the September 7 Green Drinks. MCDOT will provide an overview of roundabouts – how to safety navigate them\, their benefits and drawbacks – and discuss several examples that have been built on the County highway system. The City of Woodstock will then talk about their experience designing and building their first roundabout at South-Lake-Madison near the Historic Woodstock Square. DESCRIPTION:Apple Creek Food Forest is a place to demonstrate the diversity of plants that can be grown for nourishment and health in our region. We are inspired by principles rooted in permaculture\, agroforestry and regenerative farming practices. All of our work here starts with a respect for the earth and the idea that farming is a giving relationship between people and the land. We had our first planting last year and plan to continue planting more elderberries\, pawpaws\, gooseberries and many other fruit and nut trees. DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Carl Edstrom\n\nIn 2012\, a series of encounters with a 95-year-old man in Copenhagen\, Denmark inspired Ole Kassow to rent a bicycle “rickshaw” and offer to take local nursing home residents on rides through the city.
