Part-time (20 hours/week)

The Bookstore Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of The Green Read bookstore in Crystal Lake and helps create a welcoming, organized, and engaging experience for customers, volunteers, and community members.

This is a hands-on, part-time position requiring approximately 20 hours per week, including some evening and weekend availability. The Manager works independently while collaborating closely with Environmental Defenders staff and bookstore volunteers.

The successful candidate will have retail experience, excellent customer service and communication skills, strong organizational abilities, and an enthusiasm for books. A genuine interest in and commitment to the Environmental Defenders’ environmental mission is important. Managerial or supervisory experience is preferred.

Do you accept book donations?
Yes! We accept 10 books per person per day. Our bookstores being managed by volunteers, and we limit the amount of books to keep their volunteer experience positive. Donations can earn a coupon for your next purchase

What kind of books do you sell?
We sell a large variety of books including: fantasy, non-fiction, sci-fi, thrillers & mysteries, romance, YA novels, children’s books, historical fiction, biographies & memoirs, true crime, and history. We are always getting a fresh selection of books and our stacks are ever-changing.

Do purchases support a nonprofit?
Yes, all profits go directly to the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County. Profits are used to provide community programs to the county like specialized recycling, habitat conservation, and composting opportunities.

Do you accept cash and credit cards?
Yes, we accept cash, credit cards, and checks. Credit card charges are subject to a small credit card fee.

Do you sell puzzles or gifts?
Yes, we stock our shelves with new puzzles, stationary, and gifts.

Can I request a specific book?
Unfortunately, due to our donation process, there is no way to request a specific book. If you are interested in a specific book or author, you may call the bookstore and ask the volunteer to check a books’ availability.
