The Environmental Defenders is strengthening and unifying our visual identity with the launch of our new Brand Guidelines. While our logo remains the same, this implementation of a new visual identity marks an important step in solidifying the Environmental Defenders’ communication in the county. As a trusted resource and advocate for all our community members, we are now implementing a recognizable, cohesive identity that reflects who we are, what we do, and our 55-year legacy of protecting, preserving, and educating McHenry County.

What are Brand Guidelines and why are they important?

Brand guidelines are a set of rules to bring structure and cohesion to a brand or organization. The intent of brand guidelines is to create a system to be adhered to in order to maintain the look and feel of the visual identity.

Within the brand guidelines, our mission, vision and identity are solidified and brought together by visual elements like tone of voice, colors, fonts, and photos.

Moreover, consistency builds trust. When brand guidelines are established, a consistent visual identity is carried throughout all communication, which in turn builds trust, connection and authenticity. Brand guidelines provide a rooted sense of recognition and responsibility which help organizations better communicate with the community.

Why did the Defenders create Brand Guidelines?

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County came together in 1971. The Defenders started out as a group of concerned citizens passionate about the environment, land development and recycling efforts. We are a grassroots organization driven by our residents, volunteers and members. Our history as an organization stands for positive environmental influence and dedicated efforts to make McHenry County a better place for everyone.

In 2026, the Defenders celebrates its 55th Anniversary. We are celebrating 55 years of fighting for natural habitat protection. 55 years of fervent recycling efforts. 55 years of protecting our local watersheds. 55 years of reducing our everyday waste. While honoring our legacy, we recognize that we have become a reputable, responsible and trustworthy voice in the community. We want that trust and reputation to be reflected in the way to communicate and present the organization to the community.

These brand guidelines do not change the Defenders, but reinforces our history and legacy through a recognizable visual identity. As a pillar of positive environmental impact in McHenry County, the Environmental Defenders is proud to commemorate our historical impact while acknowledging our broadening responsibility to our community members and beyond.

Our future in McHenry County is hopeful and bright, and the Defenders intend to continue to make positive strides in the community. In collaboration with passionate and dedicated community members, our legacy will continue to grow. Our mission to preserve, protect and educate will flourish with the advocacy and empowerment of our citizens and neighbors. Our brand guidelines root us in trustworthiness and respect while paving the path for growth and progress.
