SUMMARY:BMP Talk & Tour: How to Care for your trees and find funding for Urban Forests
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about some local threats to trees\, how to provide excellent care for trees on your facility’s property\, and funding opportunities for urban forestry that are available to local governments through the Inflation Reduction Act. Urban and community forestry have historically been underfunded\, but now may be the time to start asking what is needed to properly care for your trees. \n\nCindi Jablonski from the McHenry County Conservation District will give an overview of spongy moths\, which can be a threat to trees in our area. She will cover their biology and provide some information on the pesticide Btk\, which is commonly used to kill their larvae (caterpillars).\nSteve Lane from Graf Tree Care will teach about best practices for caring for trees as well as possible funding sources to implement these practices on a landscape\, municipal\, county\, etc. scale.\nLisa Haderlein from The Land Conservancy of McHenry County will share information about the their Project Quercus Planting Project where oaks can be planted on your facility’s grounds for free.   \nAfter the presentations we will take a short walk through the oak woodlands near the Center providing additional tips on tree I.D. and tree care.  \n\nTo register for this workshop\, please RSVP at https://tinyurl.com/BMPTourSignup \nThe Talk and Tour workshops are provided by the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County’s Water and Natural Resources Protection Action Team in collaboration with the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development.   \nFor more information on how you can help protect McHenry County’s natural resources visit the Defenders website https://mcdef.org/.

SUMMARY:Green Drinks McHenry County: Carbon Capture in IL
DESCRIPTION:Topics To Discuss: \nLan and Pam Richart are Co-Directors of Eco-Justice Collaborative\, a non-profit that utilizes grassroots education and advocacy to address urgent environmental issues through the lens of social\, economic\, and environmental justice. Lan is an ecologist and Pam a land use planner. For over 20 years they were principals and owners of a Chicago area environmental consulting firm specializing in environmental impact assessment and public involvement.\nIn 2004\, Lan and Pam sold their business to three senior employees and began the journey into the non-profit world. Since then\, EJC has brought organizations and individuals together in coalition\, working to address global climate change\, reduce the use of fossil fuels\, promote environmental sustainability and support the development of renewable energy.\n\nEJC was the lead organizer of the 2012 and 2013 Bioneers conferences held at UIC and Roosevelt University. They were the the motivating forces behind the Chicago Clean Power Ordinance that led to the closure of the Fisk and Crawford coal plants. They organized a grassroots effort that helped force Dynegy Midwest Energy to begin a cleanup of 3.3 million cubic tons of toxic coal ash along Illinois’ only scenic river and also led to the passage of the Coal Ash Pollution Prevention Act in 2019.\n\nEJC is now leading a statewide coalition opposing the current build out of thousands of miles of CO2 pipeline by the oil and gas industry; part of a plan to prolong the use of fossil fuels by capturing tens of millions of tons of carbon emissions and injecting them underground in central Illinois.\nWelcome – Coalition to Stop CO2 Pipelines (noillinoisco2pipelines.org)\nThis event will be hybrid\, for those who are unable to attend in person. \nPre-registration is required for Zoom attendance\, but not for in-person attendance. \nRegister in advance for this meeting: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0ocuurqjItGt0MEtPCRqG6rGJmbQ_qxv9U \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nSocializing begins at 5pm in-person\, program begins at 6 pm. \nCohosted by The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen \n\n\n\n\n\nGreen Drinks is a monthly\, informal meeting between people in the environmental field and environmentalist that takes place throughout the globe. McHenry County’s Green Drinks is held on the first Wednesday of every month at Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen in Crystal Lake. Every month features a new speaker on a topic related to environmentalism.
