SUMMARY:Green Drinks McHenry County: Back to the Basics of Recycling
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informative talk on recycling as we delve into the fascinating world of sustainable practices and waste management. In this engaging presentation\, we will explore various aspects of recycling\, from everyday curbside collections to unique items that require special attention.\n\nKim Hankins\, Director of Sustainability at McHenry County College and President of the Board of Directors for the Environmental Defenders\, will kick off the talk by discussing the types of materials that can be easily recycled through curbside programs\, focusing on mailing materials\, packaging\, and plastic film. We will also delve into exciting initiatives like Trex and HTR\, shedding light on how these programs contribute to sustainable living. Kim will briefly touch upon the history and significance of the Green Guide.\nKelli Boeckmann\, Solid Waste Manager for McHenry County Department of Health\, will take the stage to explore items that don’t make it into the standard curbside bins\, including medical waste\, sharps\, and hazardous household waste. She will discuss pending laws that could affect the disposal of these items and the importance of responsible disposal. Kelli will also explain the new laws surrounding paint disposal and the journey of these items after they leave our homes\, uncovering the ‘where does it go?’ mystery. She’ll introduce us to the fascinating world of waste management robots at WM and LRS’s solid waste plan for the southside of Chicago and how it connects with McHenry County.\n\n\nThis event will be hybrid\, for those who are unable to attend in person. DESCRIPTION:Salt Smart Training for Parking Lots and Sidewalks\nTuesday\, October 24\, 2023\n8:00 AM to 1:00 PM\n\nRingers Landscaping\n2101 IL – Route 176\nCrystal Lake\, IL 60014\n\nThe excessive use of road salt is polluting the water resources we all depend on. Salt Smart practices help maintain safety while reducing pollution and saving money. The exciting new Salt Smart Certified training program teaches snow and ice management professionals how to use industry-proven Salt Smart practices that maintain safety on parking lots and sidewalks while reducing pollution and saving money. The Salt Smart Certified training is designed for management staff from organizations like private contractors\, businesses\, park districts\, school districts\, public libraries\, municipalities\, or others who maintain parking lots and sidewalks during the winter. Salt Smart Certified was developed for Illinois by the Smart Salt Collaborative\, a program of the Conservation Foundation\, and a steering committee of professionals with funding from a grant by the Illinois EPA. Individuals who attend this training program and pass the evaluation will be recognized as Salt Smart Trained for three years. Organizations with Smart Salt Trained staff can choose to register as Salt Smart Certified.
