The shredder can only take paper. No CD’s or thumb drives.\n2. Staples and paper clips do not need to be removed.\n3. Binder clips\, three ring binders and the like Need To Be Removed prior to shredding. Please do so before attending the event.\n4. Participants need to take back empty bags or boxes. \n \nThe Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will be onsite collecting \nBatteries‒ Household (A\, C\, D\, AA\, AAA\, Lithium\, Ni-Cad\, Button and NI-MH) are accepted for $1.00 per pound\, which only covers our costs to get them recycled. Through 2033\, federal and state incentives can help homeowners and renters cut their energy footprints and save money.\n\nThe Defenders is hosting free informational sessions on the tax credits and rebates available to residents for improving the energy efficiency of their homes and switching their appliances and cars to electricity. SUMMARY:BMP Talk & Tour: Smart Infrastructure Management
DESCRIPTION:As material and labor costs continue to rise\, it is increasingly important to manage infrastructure and other assets as efficiently as possible. CityWorks is an easy to use GIS-based asset management system that helps organizations better manage their operations and infrastructure. The Village of Algonquin has been using CityWorks for over six years and have effectively incorporated it into their day to day operations. This includes paperless service requests from the public and work order generation\, managing stormwater and public open space\, and maintaining public infrastructure. Michelle Zimmerman\, Deputy Director for Algonquin Public Works\, will show us how the Village has used CityWorks to significantly reduce costs\, improve efficiency\, streamline maintenance\, and improve service.\n\nAbout Best Management Practices Talks & Tours:\nBeginning in 2022\, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County’s Water & Natural Resources Protection Action Team and the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development are hosting Friday BMP Talks and Tours* that showcase some of the exciting Best Management Practices (BMPs)* being implemented in McHenry County. Links to videos of most of the 2022 & 2023 Talks and Tours can be found in the table below. We are looking forward to hosting this program again in 2024 during the months of April to November.\n*The term ‘Best Management Practices’\, or BMPs\, was coined as a way to describe state-of-the-art practices implemented to protect and maintain the integrity of nature resources and promote conservation of land\, water and energy. A BMP can be a structural “thing” that you actually install on the ground. Examples include stormwater treatment trains\, rain gardens\, energy-saving buildings\, etc. A BMP can also be part of the “process” that you use to plan\, design\, construct and conduct your operations. Examples include energy conservation measures\, conservation design for developments and practices such as sensible road salting programs.\n\nThe events are held on Friday afternoons\, to make attending them convenient for staff of municipalities\, townships\, school districts\, park districts\, libraries\, schools and churches\, as well as the general public.\n\nTo improve the resiliency of our communities and sustainably manage resources\, it is becoming increasingly important to implement the BMPs showcased in these workshops. SUMMARY:Green Drinks McHenry County: Illinois Food Scrap and Composting Coalition
DESCRIPTION:About the Presentation:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Illinois Food Scrap & Composting Coalition (IFSCC) is the voice of responsible organics and food scrap management and recycling in Illinois!  A town hall meeting in 2012 assembled to discuss food scrap diversion from Illinois landfills.  The conversation continued\, the Not-For-Profit was formally organized and registered with the Secretary of State in 2016\, and the scope and success of the organization has grown even since.  Two critical facts influenced the expansion of the mission and the constituency of the organization; food scrap diversion is dependent upon general organics processing infrastructure\, and end markets (USE!) of the composts produced are necessary if the diversion agenda is to succeed (circularity and economic sustainability).  The IFSCC mission and efforts span the full spectrum from food scrap diversion\, to contamination mitigation in food and general organics being sent to composters and other responsible processors\, to responsible transportation and delivery of the materials\, to responsible management and processing of the organics\, to end user education and development of the markets for sale and use of Illinois composts.  The membership expertise and passions range from “grassroots” environmentalists through and including businesses of various sizes who operate throughout the entire organics management network from “Generators” through “End Users”. Cooperatively learning\, educating and deploying (projects)\, the IFSCC aspires to partner with people\, organizations\, and government units to achieve the many shared environmental\, social\, and economic benefits that responsible organics recycling can bring to Illinois.  The IFSCC also serves as the host of the Illinois Chapter of the U.S. Composting Council (USCC).\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\nDr. Benjamin Krumstok serves as the Executive Director of the Illinois Food Scrap & Composting Coalition (IFSCC).  He has previously served the organization as Chairman\, Vice Chair\, Board Member\, and Chair of the Compost Market Development Committee.  Benjamin is also a member of the U.S. Composting Council (USCC) and serves as a member of their Chapter Advisory Committee. \nBenjamin earned his B.S. in Biology at the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign and his M.D. at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Benjamin enjoyed his first career as a hospital based Radiologist in a private practice\, then pivoted from Human Medicine in 2016 and migrated into the Composting Industry. Since founding Composting Partners Benjamin has been working to increase public appreciation of the uses and benefits of composts manufactured from the full spectrum of organic feedstocks. SUMMARY:Green Drinks McHenry County: Free the Fox River!
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Description:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe dams on the Fox River were constructed to provide mechanical power for local industry. In some cases\, the impoundment created by the dams were a source of ice cut for refrigeration. Power is no longer generated by these dams\, nor are ice blocks harvested. The dams have been found to significantly degrade habitat and water quality\, disrupt fish and mussel dispersal\, and present a safety hazard to humans.\n\nMuch has been accomplished to improve local water quality over the past 50 years. Now\, the cheapest and easiest way to further improve Fox River water quality\, safety\, recreation opportunities and remove it from Illinois’ list of impaired waters is to restore its natural habitat through dam removal.\n\nFriends of the Fox River (FOTFR) has been advocating for river restoration for over 30 years. FOTFR representatives Gary Swick and Art Malm will address the Fox River’s natural history\, the water and habitat quality problems created by the dams\, address common concerns with support from scientific data\, and provide an update to the Army Corps’ dam removal plans with an exciting vision for the future.\n\nAbout the speakers:\nArt Malm is a retired registered professional engineer and a graduate of Cornell University’s College of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Art made water pollution control and public water supply his profession for five decades. His public and private sector experience includes the design\, construction and operation of municipal and industrial water and water pollution control infrastructure. In his career he managed nearly a quarter of a billion dollars of public infrastructure projects. Since retirement Art spent six years as a Trustee for the Fox River Water Reclamation District during which time he became increasingly focused on the restoration of our Fox River. Art currently serves on the boards of Friends of the Fox River and the Fox River Study Group.\n\nGary Swick has been an environmental educator his entire adult life. He has been restoring the natural environment for over 40 years. He has been with Friends of the Fox River for 30 years\, and an advocate for river restoration through dam removal that entire time. He may look tired and grumpy\, but he has never been more excited about the future of the Fox River.\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be hybrid\, for those who are unable to attend in person. DESCRIPTION:Becoming energy efficient\, or using less energy for the same services\, is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to reduce energy use. By reducing energy use\, consumers save money and reduce carbon emissions\, making it one of many climate change  solutions.   \nIn October\, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County are hosting two free in-person informational sessions on tax credits and rebates available to residents for improving the energy efficiency of  their homes and switching their appliances and cars to electricity. The sessions will be held from 6 to 7 pm each night. Marina Minic from the Citizen Utility Board will lead the session. Sessions will be held on: \n6-7 pm\, Thursday\, October 26\, Harvard Diggins Library\, 900 E McKinley St\, Harvard\n6-7 pm\, Thursday\, November 9\, Woodstock Public Library\, 414 W Judd St\, Woodstock\n6-7 pm\, Monday\, November 27\, McHenry Township\, 3703 N Richmond Rd\, Johnsburg \nBetween the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, federal legislation passed in 2022\, and the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA)\, a state act passed in 2021\, several tax credits and rebates are available for energy efficiency and electrification for residents in our county. Low and Medium Income (LMI) residents can often receive higher incentives. DESCRIPTION:Presentation Description:\nThe Illinois Nature Preserve Commission is celebrating its 60th anniversary. This is a good time to reflect on past achievements (Illinois Nature Preserves Commission 60th Anniversary (arcgis.com)\, but more importantly\, it is a good time to have a realistic discussion about the future of our nature preserve system and how we can adequately steward these places in times of budgetary uncertainties\, climate change\, and a proliferation of invasive species. Good things are happening. A new chapter seems to be unfolding with the formation of Friends of Illinois Nature Preserves (Friends of Illinois Nature Preserves | DeKalb IL | Facebook) and a renewed emphasis on the role of people in nature. We’ll talk about how volunteer restoration communities – friends for our nature preserves – can play (and have played) a crucial role in preserving biodiversity in Illinois. In this area\, there’s a couple groups that have been working on this – one that’s made significant progress at Kishwaukee Fen\, a small but important site in the village of Lakewood – and a one-month old group just getting started on an exciting new management strategy at Volo Bog. We’ll talk about what kind of work these groups are doing\, how partnerships between staff and volunteers make an impact\, and why volunteers are such an important part of caring for these sites.\n\nBios (young pup and old dog):\n\nJohnathan Sabath (young pup) has worked to support the Illinois Nature Preserve System as a Field Rep with Friends of Illinois Nature Preserves since January of this year. In his role\, he spends most of his time working with volunteer stewardship communities at sites throughout NE Illinois. Recently\, he’s helped new groups get established at Volo Bog\, Illinois Beach State Park\, and Superior Street Prairie – and in McHenry County\, he’s worked closely with the Friends of Kishwaukee Fen – which you’ll hear more about in the presentation. Connecting everyday people to the most important natural places in our state\, and working with them so they become experts in the ecology and care of these sites is one of the most important ways Friends of Illinois Nature Preserves helps protect nature in our state. We’ve seen this make a difference not just by preserving the biodiversity at these sites\, but through stewards building community with each other and with nature.\n\nJohn Nelson (old dog) has worked as a staff member of the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission since 2000. His first assignment was as a Northeast Illinois Threats Program Manager. This primarily involved protection of nature preserves from adjacent development threats during a period of rapid urban expansion in McHenry\, Lake\, Kane\, and other nearby counties. No one else wanted this job! In 2005\, John began work as a Field Representative for the Commission in Northwestern Illinois. Today\, John represents the Commission’s work in Northeastern Illinois following the retirement of Steve Byers. So\, John has worked most of the Northern portion of Illinois on behalf of the Commission for 23 years. In addition to helping protect and dedicate sites into the Illinois Nature Preserves System\, John helps manage and restore sites with a wide-variety of landowners – both public and private.\n\n\n\nThis event will be hybrid\, for those who are unable to attend in person. SUMMARY:Make a Difference Day: Triangle Prairie Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Make a Difference Day 2023 \nSaturday\, October 28\, 9 – 11 a.m. \nTriangle Prairie \nCorner of Hwy 14 and Lake Avenue in Woodstock \nMake a Difference Day is celebrated annually in October. If you have ever wondered if your actions can make a difference\, the answer is “Yes”!  We have taken part in this day of service for many years by organizing volunteers to help remove invasives and collect trash at one of the prairies that we manage in order to improve habitat for native plant and animal species. \nOn Saturday\, October 28\, you are invited to “make a difference” by helping with restoration efforts at Triangle Prairie on the corner of Hwy 14 and Lake Avenue in Woodstock as part of the national “Make A Difference Day” celebration.  In addition to cutting resprouts from our workdays last winter\, we’ll also be collecting trash throughout the site.  And if weather conditions permit\, we’ll burn some piles of branches left over from our past workdays.  The event will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 11a.m.   \nVolunteers are asked to wear work clothes\, gloves\, and boots.  Please park in the SW corner of the Walmart parking lot and walk down to the prairie   All necessary equipment and snacks will be provided. Please bring your own water.  If you have any questions about this event\, please contact Nancy Schietzelt at buroak92@gmail.com or call the office at 815-338-0393.  Come help us make a positive difference in our environment and enjoy some time outdoors!

Salt Smart practices help maintain safety while reducing pollution and saving money. The exciting new Salt Smart Certified training program teaches snow and ice management professionals how to use industry-proven Salt Smart practices that maintain safety on parking lots and sidewalks while reducing pollution and saving money. The Salt Smart Certified training is designed for management staff from organizations like private contractors\, businesses\, park districts\, school districts\, public libraries\, municipalities\, or others who maintain parking lots and sidewalks during the winter. Salt Smart Certified was developed for Illinois by the Smart Salt Collaborative\, a program of the Conservation Foundation\, and a steering committee of professionals with funding from a grant by the Illinois EPA. Individuals who attend this training program and pass the evaluation will be recognized as Salt Smart Trained for three years. Organizations with Smart Salt Trained staff can choose to register as Salt Smart Certified. We will also delve into exciting initiatives like Trex and HTR\, shedding light on how these programs contribute to sustainable living. Kim will briefly touch upon the history and significance of the Green Guide.\nKelli Boeckmann\, Solid Waste Manager for McHenry County Department of Health\, will take the stage to explore items that don’t make it into the standard curbside bins\, including medical waste\, sharps\, and hazardous household waste. She will discuss pending laws that could affect the disposal of these items and the importance of responsible disposal. Kelli will also explain the new laws surrounding paint disposal and the journey of these items after they leave our homes\, uncovering the ‘where does it go?’ mystery. The route\, including the relatively new Randall Road underpass\, is 15 miles long\, but shorter (7\, 8\, 11 mile) options are possible along portions of the loop.
