DESCRIPTION:Migrate to the Crystal Lake beach for the afternoon to enjoy this free event and learn all about monarch butterflies and how you can help them and other pollinators thrive. The Monarch Fest will include butterfly and native pollinator plant info from many groups\, including the Defenders’ Water and Natural Resources Protection Action Team\, face painting\, science and art activities and a big migration route map showing the Monarch butterflies’ amazing yearly journey from their winter grounds in the mountains of Mexico to their summer homes in the USA and Canada. Native pollinator plants from participating nurseries will be available for purchase. \n  \nThe Monarch Fest will run from 12:30-4:30 pm on Sunday\, August 14 at the Main Beach Pavilion at 300 Lakeshore Dr in Crystal Lake. You are also invited to enjoy a community band showcase at the beach bandshell from 1-4:15 pm. Bring your blanket and a picnic! \n  \nThe Monarch Fair is presented by The Monarch Coalition and hosted by Friends of Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge in conjunction with US Fish & Wildlife Service and multiple local conservation organizations.

Pioneer Road\, three miles north of McHenry\, for the Environmental Defenders’ ANNUAL CORN ROAST!  Get caught up on all things Defenders\, enjoy roasted corn\, shared dishes\, fresh air\, and fun with Environmental Defenders’ members\, Saturday\, August 13\, 2022\, beginning at 4 PM. There will be lots of  \nactivities\, including informal nature walks\, outdoor games\, chicken feeding\, hayrides and more!  \nBring a main dish\, salad\, or dessert to share\, labeled serving utensils\, and your own cups and eating utensils. Single-use plates will be provided.  \nHelp will be needed roasting corn\, setting up\, cleaning up\, and overseeing the food service. It will truly be unique in many ways. It will be an opportunity not only to appreciate the beautiful Fox River and its abundant bird life. This may be your last opportunity to paddle the Carpentersville dam’s impoundment as the dam is scheduled for removal this fall.  This may also be your last time to portage (woohoo!) and when we do\, we’ll be met by Gary Swick\, President of Friends of the Fox River.  Gary will discuss the dam’s history and benefits of its removal for restoring the health of the Fox River. SUMMARY:Best Management Practices Talk and Tour: How To Successfully Manage Natural Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 22 — From 1 to 3 PM \nEvent is free & open to the public but limited to 30 people \nMeet at Ted Spella Park in Algonquin \nInfrastructure and landscaping that use native vegetation helps to manage stormwater and reduce flooding while also recharging groundwater\, purifying water\, providing habitat\, and creating natural beauty. \nThe use of native vegetation and other forms of green infrastructure are powerful tools to improve resiliency of our communities. While landscaping with native vegetation is not rocket science\, most conventional landscapers do not have the knowledge or skills to successfully install or maintain these systems. When properly implemented by qualified professionals\, natural landscaping can also reduce annual operating costs over conventional landscaping and provide benefits for generations to come. \n· Michele Zimmerman\, Assistant Public Works Director for the Village of Algonquin\, will showcase the natural landscaping systems and best management practices that have been successfully installed at Spella Park.  Michelle will also discuss how the Village uses contracts and performance standards to successfully implement projects throughout the Village. The examples will include detailed information demonstrating the economic benefits. \n· The Village’s ecological contractor\, Resource Environmental Solutions (RES)\, will provide technical guidance on how to properly establish and maintain natural landscaping. Now retired\, Steve’s professional background includes serving 29 years as Field Representative for the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission. Steve also retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a Colonel and Chief of Staff for the 330th Medical Brigade.\nNancy Williamson – Treasurer and founding member of Friends of Hackmatack NWR. Nancy retired from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources as a Watershed Manager for the C2000 Program with responsibility for northern Illinois. DESCRIPTION:An evening with a nice bonfire\, wine\, cheese and crackers and good Defenders’ friends on the hilltop of our Dean Street property! What could be more relaxing than that? Our Membership Action Team would like to invite you to such an evening on June 11 at 6pm. Bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share\, and we will supply the cheese and crackers! We’ll have soft drinks as well as other snacks to top off the evening. Bring your own cups and plates. Please park in the Soil and Water Conservation District parking lot at 2222 Dean Street. Then join us at the bonfire at the top of the hill on our property to the south of the lot. We have picnic tables to sit at\, but you may wish to bring lawn chairs. And please plan for mosquitoes with long pants\, long sleeves and repellant. We’ll hope for great weather\, but just in case\, our rain date is set for June 18. DESCRIPTION:Apple Creek Food Forest is a place to demonstrate the diversity of plants that can be grown for nourishment and health in our region. It is a place that welcomes a diversity of people to gather\, experiment\, learn and share their knowledge. We are inspired by principles rooted in permaculture\, agroforestry and regenerative farming practices. All of our work here starts with a respect for the earth and the idea that farming is a giving relationship between people and the land. We had our first planting last year and plan to continue planting more elderberries\, pawpaws\, gooseberries and many other fruit and nut trees. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 14th\, you are invited by our Water and Natural Resources Protection Action Team and the Boone-Dutch Creeks Watershed Alliance to help clean up the mainstem of Boone Creek that runs through the City of McHenry. This event\, held in collaboration with the City of McHenry and the Fox Waterway Agency\, will begin at 1 pm and conclude at about 3 pm\, or when all the trash has been removed. Volunteers are asked to wear work clothes\, gloves\, and boots and to park in the Public Works parking lot at 1415 Industrial Dr. in McHenry\, located behind the Jewel grocery store. All necessary equipment as well as snacks will be provided. Please bring your own water.
