DESCRIPTION:An evening with a nice bonfire\, wine\, cheese and crackers and good Defenders’ friends on the hilltop of our Dean Street property! What could be more relaxing than that? Our Membership Action Team would like to invite you to such an evening on June 11 at 6pm. Bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share\, and we will supply the cheese and crackers! We’ll have soft drinks as well as other snacks to top off the evening. Bring your own cups and plates. Please park in the Soil and Water Conservation District parking lot at 2222 Dean Street. Then join us at the bonfire at the top of the hill on our property to the south of the lot. We have picnic tables to sit at\, but you may wish to bring lawn chairs. And please plan for mosquitoes with long pants\, long sleeves and repellant. We’ll hope for great weather\, but just in case\, our rain date is set for June 18. DESCRIPTION:Apple Creek Food Forest is a place to demonstrate the diversity of plants that can be grown for nourishment and health in our region. It is a place that welcomes a diversity of people to gather\, experiment\, learn and share their knowledge. We are inspired by principles rooted in permaculture\, agroforestry and regenerative farming practices. All of our work here starts with a respect for the earth and the idea that farming is a giving relationship between people and the land. We had our first planting last year and plan to continue planting more elderberries\, pawpaws\, gooseberries and many other fruit and nut trees. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 14th\, you are invited by our Water and Natural Resources Protection Action Team and the Boone-Dutch Creeks Watershed Alliance to help clean up the mainstem of Boone Creek that runs through the City of McHenry. This event\, held in collaboration with the City of McHenry and the Fox Waterway Agency\, will begin at 1 pm and conclude at about 3 pm\, or when all the trash has been removed. Volunteers are asked to wear work clothes\, gloves\, and boots and to park in the Public Works parking lot at 1415 Industrial Dr. in McHenry\, located behind the Jewel grocery store. All necessary equipment as well as snacks will be provided. Please bring your own water. DESCRIPTION:SPEAKER: Carl Edstrom\n\nIn 2012\, a series of encounters with a 95-year-old man in Copenhagen\, Denmark inspired Ole Kassow to rent a bicycle “rickshaw” and offer to take local nursing home residents on rides through the city. DESCRIPTION:Paddle On Outfitters has teamed up with the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and Paddle the Kish in Marengo. Join us April 30th for a leisure paddle through the North Branch of Kishwaukee River. Our voyage will begin at 10am by parking at Siems Memorial Park in Union. There Paddle On will have your kayaks ready for you. If you would like to bring your own kayak\, Paddle On will have a shuttle service available. Tickets for rentals and shuttles are available at www.paddleonoufitters.com or their Ticket Tailor link: https://buytickets.at/paddleonoufitterscom/653663. All paddlers are required to fill out a paperless waiver after you have purchased a rental or shuttle ticket. \n  \nThe trip could take up to 3 hours to complete. We will be keeping track of water levels throughout that week. We highly encourage bringing towels\, plenty of water and a light snack. All rentals will have life jackets provided along with paddles. Dry boxes will be available to rent through the Ticket Tailor link. All paddlers bringing their own kayak are highly encouraged to provide their own life jackets. \n\nAge requirements: All ages are able to attend. We do not encourage newborns or very small infants to attend due to the potential dangers. Trained guides will be available if you are a beginner and/or want to learn. After the trip\, Paddle On will provide a shuttle back to Siems Memorial Park.
