SUMMARY:Green Drinks McHenry County: Sustainability in Action at the Wild Onion Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Throughout October\, for every pint sold on Wednesdays $1 will be donated to the Environmental Defenders! Come see them speak about their sustainable practices at Green Drinks in October.\n\nTopics To Discuss:\n-Restoration of former gravel quarry and grounds to native plants and trees.\n-Construction of a highly energy efficient building and brewery\, incorporating geothermal technology and a new construction product.\n-Ongoing focus of energy conservation in all of the company’s operations has been a focus for the past 19 years of operation.\n-Maintaining and managing the restored prairie vegetation using traditional techniques.\n-Implementation of composting in back of property\, followed by building a small-scale vermiculture farm.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nMike Kainz\, age 56\, is the founding brewmaster and co-owner of Wild Onion Brewery in Lake Barrington\, IL. Graduated with a BA from Denison University in 1987\, double majoring in French and Economics. Mike spent his junior year in college studying in Paris\, France\, where he learned to appreciate all the amazing styles and flavors of beer that have been brewed in Europe for centuries. Upon returning to the States in 1986\, Mike began home brewing out of necessity to recreate those full-bodied styles of beer-the craft beer revolution was in its infancy at that point\, with few choices of beer styles available to consumers at that point.\nMike joined the Peace Corps after college\, working as an agriculture volunteer in Morocco. He was tasked with converting a 2 1/2 acre lot to a functioning small-scale farm on the grounds of an orphanage in the town of Taroudant in southern Morocco. This experience led to his lifelong passion of sustainable gardening and composting.\nTogether with his family\, Mike founded Wild Onion Brewery in 1996 in Lake Barrington. The original brewery was located in a leased warehouse two blocks away from its current location on Pepper Road. Mike brewed the beer\, while brothers Pat and John delivered to local bars and stores. The Kainz family purchased the current property that houses the Pub\, Brewery and Banquet Hall in 2000\, and opened it’s doors in 2003.\n\n\nThis event will be hybrid\, for those who are unable to attend in person.\n\nPre-registration is required for Zoom attendance\, but not for in-person attendance.\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUvcOmuqDwuG9flZCpES732tSvMztuUaCgV?fbclid=IwAR2YuPmItRsXXOOfZxG90sEkwGwwzxMLhwOesCNbYxyiwVeMVqyQFKGBp7A\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\nSocializing begins at 5pm in-person\, program begins at 6pm.\n\nCohosted by The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen\n\n\n\n\nGreen Drinks is a monthly\, informal meeting between people in the environmental field and environmentalist that takes place throughout the globe. McHenry County’s Green Drinks is held on the first Wednesday of every month at Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen in Crystal Lake. Every month features a new speaker on a topic related to environmentalism. SUMMARY:Best Management Practices Talk and Tour: How To Successfully Manage Natural Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 22 — From 1 to 3 PM \nEvent is free & open to the public but limited to 30 people \nMeet at Ted Spella Park in Algonquin \nInfrastructure and landscaping that use native vegetation helps to manage stormwater and reduce flooding while also recharging groundwater\, purifying water\, providing habitat\, and creating natural beauty. \nThe use of native vegetation and other forms of green infrastructure are powerful tools to improve resiliency of our communities. While landscaping with native vegetation is not rocket science\, most conventional landscapers do not have the knowledge or skills to successfully install or maintain these systems. When properly implemented by qualified professionals\, natural landscaping can also reduce annual operating costs over conventional landscaping and provide benefits for generations to come. \n· Michele Zimmerman\, Assistant Public Works Director for the Village of Algonquin\, will showcase the natural landscaping systems and best management practices that have been successfully installed at Spella Park.  Michelle will also discuss how the Village uses contracts and performance standards to successfully implement projects throughout the Village. The examples will include detailed information demonstrating the economic benefits. \n· The Village’s ecological contractor\, Resource Environmental Solutions (RES)\, will provide technical guidance on how to properly establish and maintain natural landscaping. This is a great opportunity to learn directly from experts. \nJoin us to see firsthand how these incredible best management practices can be implemented in your communities! Bring your water bottle and be prepared to walk through the park. \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register here for this Talk & Tour. This will help us plan refreshments for the event. \nThis is the fourth in the series of Friday Talks and Tours scheduled by the EDMC’s Water & Natural Resources Protection Action Team and the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development that showcase some of the exciting Best Management Practices (BMPs) being implemented in McHenry County. \nClick here for the evolving schedule of planned Friday BMP Talks and Tours. There you will also find links to videos of the past sessions.
