SUMMARY:BMP Talk & Tour: Green Infrastructure for Flood Mitigation
DESCRIPTION:Like many cities throughout the country\, Crystal Lake is learning to adapt to increased flooding in our communities. This program will demonstrate how green infrastructure and native vegetation can be used to effectively mitigate flooding in urbanized areas while providing a multitude of additional benefits. \nThe program will be led by staff from Crystal Lake Public Works who have been directly involved in addressing flood issues. DESCRIPTION:Topics To Discuss: \nLan and Pam Richart are Co-Directors of Eco-Justice Collaborative\, a non-profit that utilizes grassroots education and advocacy to address urgent environmental issues through the lens of social\, economic\, and environmental justice. Lan is an ecologist and Pam a land use planner. For over 20 years they were principals and owners of a Chicago area environmental consulting firm specializing in environmental impact assessment and public involvement.\nIn 2004\, Lan and Pam sold their business to three senior employees and began the journey into the non-profit world. Since then\, EJC has brought organizations and individuals together in coalition\, working to address global climate change\, reduce the use of fossil fuels\, promote environmental sustainability and support the development of renewable energy.\n\nEJC was the lead organizer of the 2012 and 2013 Bioneers conferences held at UIC and Roosevelt University. They were the the motivating forces behind the Chicago Clean Power Ordinance that led to the closure of the Fisk and Crawford coal plants. DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about some local threats to trees\, how to provide excellent care for trees on your facility’s property\, and funding opportunities for urban forestry that are available to local governments through the Inflation Reduction Act. Urban and community forestry have historically been underfunded\, but now may be the time to start asking what is needed to properly care for your trees. \n\nCindi Jablonski from the McHenry County Conservation District will give an overview of spongy moths\, which can be a threat to trees in our area. With the passage of the Illinois Clean Energy Jobs Act and the Federal Inflation Reduction Act\, there are many opportunities and incentives available to governmental bodies\, as well as homeowners and businesses\, to increase their energy efficiency\, reduce their utility costs and improve comfort. \nMarina Minic\, from the Citizens Utility Board\, will detail all the opportunities available to governmental bodies and businesses. Opportunities for homeowners will then be presented by Mike Zanillo\, from Citizens’ Climate Lobby. After the presentations we will be treated to a virtual tour of the geothermal heat pump installation in the Old Courthouse Restoration Project in Woodstock from the project’s architect. DESCRIPTION:Reducing waste is an important task for the environment\, and local businesses can make a big impact by implementing composting programs. To encourage this effort\, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County are launching the “Race to Reduce Waste” promotion\, which runs from April 20th to May 20th\, 2023. \nDuring this time\, guests who dine at participating restaurants will have the opportunity to win a $100 gift certificate to their favorite business by entering a raffle. The more you dine\, the more chances you have to win! To enter\, simply scan the unique QR code at each restaurant and fill out the form. If you’re having trouble finding the QR code\, just ask your server. \nThe participating restaurants include Crystal Lake Brewing\, Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen\, Conscious Cup Coffee Roasters (Crystal Lake location only)\, Dunkin’ Donuts Crystal Lake (Crystal Lake location on Route 14 only)\, Julie Ann’s Frozen Custard\, Cantina 52\, AROMA\, and UpRising Bakery and Cafe. Each of these businesses has implemented a composting program for the duration of the promotion\, and they have displayed a supplied sign with their unique QR code in a prominent space within their establishment for guests to use to check in. \nThe first guest to visit all of the participating restaurants within the time frame will win a special gift basket featuring local products and reusable materials. It’s a great way to support local businesses and reduce waste in the community. \nA very special thank you to McHenry County College and Hickory Hall Crystal Lake for signing up for our composting program without participating in the Race to reduce Waste. \nTo participate\, businesses receive training and resources from WasteNot\, and they will be supplied with educational and training materials for their team. This session will focus on the benefits of reducing nighttime light pollution on birds and insects and our own ability to see stars at night.\nWe’ll hear from McHenry County Audubon President Lisa Maier about the impacts that light pollution has on wildlife.\nVillage of Bull Valley President Emily Berendt will walk us through the Outdoor Lighting Ordinance that her village recently adopted based on International Dark Sky Association sample ordinances. This is one of the actions that Bull Valley took in 2022 to fulfill their enrollment in the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge.\nWe’ll provide you with World Migratory Bird Day literature on ways to improve outdoor lighting to reduce light pollution. DESCRIPTION:Topics To Discuss:\nGift giving is a warm and loving tradition that goes on steroids during the winter holidays. Along with gifts comes gift wrapping. In Japan\, it is said that giving a gift is like wrapping one’s heart. There\, the concept of wrapping plays a central role in the spiritual and cultural aspects of life. This aesthetic is reflected in the role of gift giving. Objects are wrapped as a kind of pledge that the contents are protected from impurities. Gift wrapping is not an end in itself but a means by which to convey the love and thought that goes into the act of giving. \nOne style of gift wrapping in Japan employs the use of furoshiki. Furoshiki is a multi-purpose carry all created from a square piece of material. Fashioning soft wrappings from large squares of colorfully patterned cloth is employed to wrap and carry objects of all shapes and sizes. The convenience of the furoshiki lies in its adaptability since it has no definite shape as does a bag. It can adapt to fit whatever you put in it – large or small\, round or square\, soft or rigid. \nPlease join us for a very special meeting of Green Drinks where\, after some hands-on learning you will be able to take home your very own furoshiki and a new skill that you can use to become just a little more “green.” All are welcome and materials will be provided. \nAbout the speaker:\nSue Jensen\, former art teacher\, Environmental Defenders of McHenry County board member and recycling drive veteran volunteer is very fond of this style of gift wrapping. It is so appealing because in addition to being unique and beautiful\, the material is reusable\, washable and a fantastic way to create less waste. Sue will share a little background information and then get everyone involved in practicing this useful art form. SUMMARY:BMP Talk & Tour: Sensible Salting and Salt Smart Certification
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the last BMP Talk and Tour workshop of 2022!  \n\nThe Talk and Tour will focus on Sensible Salting and Salt Smart Certification.  This free program is open to everyone and will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 PM on Friday\, November 4 in Conference Room B of the McHenry County Administration Building at 667 Ware Road\, Woodstock\, IL 60098.  We highly recommend elected officials\, municipal staff\, facilities managers\, and business owners attend this workshop. \nOur expanding use of roadsalt and other chemical deicers damages the environment\, corrodes infrastructure\, and pollutes water.
