SUMMARY:BMP Talk & Tour: Dim the Lights for Birds\, Insects & Stars at Night Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the first BMP Talk and Tour workshop of 2023!  \n\n\nAgain this year\, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County’s Water & Natural Resources Protection Action Team and the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development are hosting Friday BMP Talks and Tours that showcase exciting Best Management Practices (BMPs) being implemented in McHenry County. The term ‘Best Management Practices’\, or BMPs\, was coined as a way to describe state-of-the-art practices implemented to protect and maintain the integrity of nature resources and promote conservation of land\, water and energy.\n\n\nOur first session of 2023 will be held as a Zoom webinar on Friday\, March 17 from 1-3 pm. This session will focus on the benefits of reducing nighttime light pollution on birds and insects and our own ability to see stars at night.\nWe’ll hear from McHenry County Audubon President Lisa Maier about the impacts that light pollution has on wildlife.\nVillage of Bull Valley President Emily Berendt will walk us through the Outdoor Lighting Ordinance that her village recently adopted based on International Dark Sky Association sample ordinances. This is one of the actions that Bull Valley took in 2022 to fulfill their enrollment in the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge.\nWe’ll provide you with World Migratory Bird Day literature on ways to improve outdoor lighting to reduce light pollution. (Available in both English and Spanish).\n\n\nTo be added to the email list for this series and to receive the Zoom link for the March 17 session\, please fill out the form at https://tinyurl.com/BMPTourSignup. Videos of past Talks and Tours can be found at tinyurl.com/FridayBMPTours\, and we are updating our 2023 schedule there as we finalize our plans for upcoming sessions.

SUMMARY:BMP Talk & Tour: Sensible Salting and Salt Smart Certification
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the last BMP Talk and Tour workshop of 2022!  \n\nThe Talk and Tour will focus on Sensible Salting and Salt Smart Certification.  This free program is open to everyone and will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 PM on Friday\, November 4 in Conference Room B of the McHenry County Administration Building at 667 Ware Road\, Woodstock\, IL 60098.  We highly recommend elected officials\, municipal staff\, facilities managers\, and business owners attend this workshop. \nOur expanding use of roadsalt and other chemical deicers damages the environment\, corrodes infrastructure\, and pollutes water. This workshop will show the impacts from our use of roadsalt and the best practices everyone can use to maintain safety while reducing pollution.  The workshop will also introduce an exciting new program that will revolutionize snow and ice management practices on parking lots and sidewalks.  A live demonstration of Sensible Salting practices will also be provided.  We are very excited about this program and guests who attend will gain a solid understanding of the issues and solutions on this important topic. \nREGISTER AT: https://bit.ly/3Kq78Qp \nLight snacks and beverages will be provided.  We will also be raffling off a brand new Earthway Liquid Push Spreader ($500 value) so one lucky guest can start practicing Sensible Salting on their own property. \nThe Talk and Tour workshops are provided by the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County’s Water and Natural Resources Committee with assistance from the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development.  For more information on how you can help protect McHenry County’s natural resources visit the Defenders website https://mcdef.org/ \nPlease register for the Talk and Tour at https://bit.ly/3Kq78Qp or contact Scott Kuykendall\, McHenry County Water Resources Specialist\, at SHKuykendall@mchenrycountyil.gov if you need additional information.

SUMMARY:Best Management Practices Talk and Tour: How To Successfully Manage Natural Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 22 — From 1 to 3 PM \nEvent is free & open to the public but limited to 30 people \nMeet at Ted Spella Park in Algonquin \nInfrastructure and landscaping that use native vegetation helps to manage stormwater and reduce flooding while also recharging groundwater\, purifying water\, providing habitat\, and creating natural beauty. \nThe use of native vegetation and other forms of green infrastructure are powerful tools to improve resiliency of our communities. While landscaping with native vegetation is not rocket science\, most conventional landscapers do not have the knowledge or skills to successfully install or maintain these systems. When properly implemented by qualified professionals\, natural landscaping can also reduce annual operating costs over conventional landscaping and provide benefits for generations to come. \n· Michele Zimmerman\, Assistant Public Works Director for the Village of Algonquin\, will showcase the natural landscaping systems and best management practices that have been successfully installed at Spella Park.  Michelle will also discuss how the Village uses contracts and performance standards to successfully implement projects throughout the Village. The examples will include detailed information demonstrating the economic benefits. \n· The Village’s ecological contractor\, Resource Environmental Solutions (RES)\, will provide technical guidance on how to properly establish and maintain natural landscaping. This is a great opportunity to learn directly from experts. \nJoin us to see firsthand how these incredible best management practices can be implemented in your communities! Bring your water bottle and be prepared to walk through the park. \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register here for this Talk & Tour. This will help us plan refreshments for the event. \nThis is the fourth in the series of Friday Talks and Tours scheduled by the EDMC’s Water & Natural Resources Protection Action Team and the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development that showcase some of the exciting Best Management Practices (BMPs) being implemented in McHenry County. \nClick here for the evolving schedule of planned Friday BMP Talks and Tours.
