The Defenders’ have accomplished so much in 2024\, and this will be the perfect opportunity for our members to hear all about it first-hand from the volunteers who make it all possible. \nDinner and dessert will be included with the ticket\, and there will be a cash bar. There will be a bag raffle and 50/50 raffle the night of the event (bring your cash!).

DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County host an annual Big Fall Book Sale September 21- October 5. It will be located at the Algonquin Township Road District Building B Garage. \nThere will be a members-only preview sale Friday\, September 20 6-8pm. If you are not an Environmental Defenders’ member but would like to participate in the pre-sale\, you will be able to join on site at a special membership price of $20 for a year’s membership\, and gain access to the pre-sale. The sale begins Saturday\, September 21 9am-4pm\, and continues running from 10am-4pm through Saturday\, October 5. It will be closed on Sundays. DESCRIPTION:The McHenry County Fair will soon be here from July 30 – August 4. The Defenders have a great spot this year to share our message with the public in Building C with several tables of displays and air conditioning!!.  We need your help to spread our environmental message to residents. This is the best opportunity to reach ordinary families! We need your help to be effective during the fair. Please sign up for as many slots as you are interested in. \nThe Fair is not offering free tickets. The cost of a weekly pass is $30\, a one day adult ticket is $10\, but for seniors 60+ a one day ticket is only $5. Please be prepared to buy your own ticket for your volunteer days\, or contact Pat Lawlor if you prefer to be reimbursed by the Defenders. DESCRIPTION:Every year the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County teams up with the McHenry County Department of Health to put on several recycling events throughout the year. \nAt this event there will be: \nElectronics Recycling \nDocument Shredding \nStyrofoam\, textiles\, light bulbs($)\, batteries($) \n \nElgin Recycling will be accepting the following electronic devices:\n• Televisions & Computer Monitors ($) Credit cards and cash will be accepted onsite.\n• Computers & Small Scale Servers\n• Printers\, FAX Machines and Scanners\n• DVD Players\, DVD Recorders and VCR’s\n• Video Game Consoles\n• Digital Converter Boxes\, Cable and Satellite Receivers\n• Electronic Keyboards\, Electronic Mice and Portable Digital Music Players \nFees for TVs and Monitors:\n$15 for any size LCD monitor\n$25 for all other units up to 20 inches\n$35 for all other units 21 inches and Larger \nIf you are unable to attend one of the collection event dates\, Elgin Recycling has a permanent site at 5114 E Terra Cotta (Route176) in Crystal Lake (Across from Country Side Flower Shop).\nOpen Monday- Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 8:00am to 1:00pm.\nFor additional information or questions regarding electronics recycling please visit\nElgin Recycling’s website at www.elginrecycling.com or contact them at 847-741-4100.\nElgin Recycling will no longer be accepting any type of batteries at the events\, but will continue to accept them at their Crystal Lake location. \n \nPaper Tiger Document Solutions will have their shred truck onsite to securely shred your sensitive paper documents.\nPlease remember these important tips for quick shredding:\n1. The shredder can only take paper. No CD’s or thumb drives.\n2. Staples and paper clips do not need to be removed.\n3. Binder clips\, three ring binders and the like Need To Be Removed prior to shredding. Please do so before attending the event.\n4. Participants need to take back empty bags or boxes. \n \nThe Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will be onsite collecting \nBatteries‒ Household (A\, C\, D\, AA\, AAA\, Lithium\, Ni-Cad\, Button and NI-MH) are accepted for $1.00 per pound\, which only covers our costs to get them recycled. DESCRIPTION:Becoming energy efficient\, or using less energy for the same services\, is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to reduce energy use. By reducing energy use\, consumers save money and reduce carbon emissions\, making it one of many climate change  solutions.   \nIn October\, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County are hosting two free in-person informational sessions on tax credits and rebates available to residents for improving the energy efficiency of  their homes and switching their appliances and cars to electricity. The sessions will be held from 6 to 7 pm each night. Marina Minic from the Citizen Utility Board will lead the session. Sessions will be held on: \n6-7 pm\, Thursday\, October 26\, Harvard Diggins Library\, 900 E McKinley St\, Harvard\n6-7 pm\, Thursday\, November 9\, Woodstock Public Library\, 414 W Judd St\, Woodstock\n6-7 pm\, Monday\, November 27\, McHenry Township\, 3703 N Richmond Rd\, Johnsburg \nBetween the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, federal legislation passed in 2022\, and the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA)\, a state act passed in 2021\, several tax credits and rebates are available for energy efficiency and electrification for residents in our county. Low and Medium Income (LMI) residents can often receive higher incentives. SUMMARY:Make a Difference Day: Triangle Prairie Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Make a Difference Day 2023 \nSaturday\, October 28\, 9 – 11 a.m. \nTriangle Prairie \nCorner of Hwy 14 and Lake Avenue in Woodstock \nMake a Difference Day is celebrated annually in October. If you have ever wondered if your actions can make a difference\, the answer is “Yes”!  We have taken part in this day of service for many years by organizing volunteers to help remove invasives and collect trash at one of the prairies that we manage in order to improve habitat for native plant and animal species. \nOn Saturday\, October 28\, you are invited to “make a difference” by helping with restoration efforts at Triangle Prairie on the corner of Hwy 14 and Lake Avenue in Woodstock as part of the national “Make A Difference Day” celebration.  In addition to cutting resprouts from our workdays last winter\, we’ll also be collecting trash throughout the site.  And if weather conditions permit\, we’ll burn some piles of branches left over from our past workdays.  The event will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 11a.m.   \nVolunteers are asked to wear work clothes\, gloves\, and boots.  Please park in the SW corner of the Walmart parking lot and walk down to the prairie   All necessary equipment and snacks will be provided. Please bring your own water.  If you have any questions about this event\, please contact Nancy Schietzelt at buroak92@gmail.com or call the office at 815-338-0393.  Come help us make a positive difference in our environment and enjoy some time outdoors!

DESCRIPTION:Salt Smart Training for Parking Lots and Sidewalks\nTuesday\, October 24\, 2023\n8:00 AM to 1:00 PM\n\nRingers Landscaping\n2101 IL – Route 176\nCrystal Lake\, IL 60014\n\nThe excessive use of road salt is polluting the water resources we all depend on. Salt Smart practices help maintain safety while reducing pollution and saving money. The exciting new Salt Smart Certified training program teaches snow and ice management professionals how to use industry-proven Salt Smart practices that maintain safety on parking lots and sidewalks while reducing pollution and saving money. The Salt Smart Certified training is designed for management staff from organizations like private contractors\, businesses\, park districts\, school districts\, public libraries\, municipalities\, or others who maintain parking lots and sidewalks during the winter. Salt Smart Certified was developed for Illinois by the Smart Salt Collaborative\, a program of the Conservation Foundation\, and a steering committee of professionals with funding from a grant by the Illinois EPA. Individuals who attend this training program and pass the evaluation will be recognized as Salt Smart Trained for three years. Organizations with Smart Salt Trained staff can choose to register as Salt Smart Certified. DESCRIPTION:Every year the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County teams up with the McHenry County Department of Health to put on several recycling events throughout the year. \nAt this event there will be: \nElectronics Recycling \nDocument Shredding \nStyrofoam\, textiles\, light bulbs($)\, batteries($) \n \nElgin Recycling will be accepting the following electronic devices:\n• Televisions & Computer Monitors ($) Credit cards and cash will be accepted onsite.\n• Computers & Small Scale Servers\n• Printers\, FAX Machines and Scanners\n• DVD Players\, DVD Recorders and VCR’s\n• Video Game Consoles\n• Digital Converter Boxes\, Cable and Satellite Receivers\n• Electronic Keyboards\, Electronic Mice and Portable Digital Music Players \nFees for TVs and Monitors:\n$15 for any size LCD monitor\n$25 for all other units up to 20 inches\n$35 for all other units 21 inches and Larger \nIf you are unable to attend one of the collection event dates\, Elgin Recycling has a permanent site at 5114 E Terra Cotta (Route176) in Crystal Lake (Across from Country Side Flower Shop).\nOpen Monday- Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 8:00am to 1:00pm.\nFor additional information or questions regarding electronics recycling please visit\nElgin Recycling’s website at www.elginrecycling.com or contact them at 847-741-4100.\nElgin Recycling will no longer be accepting any type of batteries at the events\, but will continue to accept them at their Crystal Lake location. \n \nPaper Tiger Document Solutions will have their shred truck onsite to securely shred your sensitive paper documents.\nPlease remember these important tips for quick shredding:\n1. The shredder can only take paper. No CD’s or thumb drives.\n2. Staples and paper clips do not need to be removed.\n3. Binder clips\, three ring binders and the like Need To Be Removed prior to shredding. Please do so before attending the event.\n4.
