Lead batteries (car\, motorcycle\, sump pump\, marine) are accepted at no charge. \nFluorescent Light Bulbs – The following are accepted for a fee\, which only covers our costs to get them recycled:\n4-foot\, $.50 each;\n8-foot\, $1.00 each;\nCompact bulbs used in lamps and lighting fixtures\, $.50 each \nPacking Peanuts – clean\, dry\, in a box or bag \nStyrofoam – clean\, with no glue\, tape\, food or anything else attached to it. Soft material that bends and is generally used in packaging is not accepted. If it has a smooth cover (usually blue or pink in color) on it\, it is not accepted. \nTextiles – Clothes\, blankets\, towels\, shoes\, etc.\, with holes\, worn out\, torn\, accepted at no charge\, BUT they must be clean.

The Defenders’ have accomplished so much in 2024\, and this will be the perfect opportunity for our members to hear all about it first-hand from the volunteers who make it all possible. \nDinner and dessert will be included with the ticket\, and there will be a cash bar. There will be a bag raffle and 50/50 raffle the night of the event (bring your cash!).

DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County host an annual Big Fall Book Sale September 21- October 5. It will be located at the Algonquin Township Road District Building B Garage. \nThere will be a members-only preview sale Friday\, September 20 6-8pm. If you are not an Environmental Defenders’ member but would like to participate in the pre-sale\, you will be able to join on site at a special membership price of $20 for a year’s membership\, and gain access to the pre-sale. The sale begins Saturday\, September 21 9am-4pm\, and continues running from 10am-4pm through Saturday\, October 5. It will be closed on Sundays. DESCRIPTION:The McHenry County Fair will soon be here from July 30 – August 4. The Defenders have a great spot this year to share our message with the public in Building C with several tables of displays and air conditioning!!.  We need your help to spread our environmental message to residents. This is the best opportunity to reach ordinary families! We need your help to be effective during the fair. Please sign up for as many slots as you are interested in. \nThe Fair is not offering free tickets. The cost of a weekly pass is $30\, a one day adult ticket is $10\, but for seniors 60+ a one day ticket is only $5. Please be prepared to buy your own ticket for your volunteer days\, or contact Pat Lawlor if you prefer to be reimbursed by the Defenders. DESCRIPTION:Location:\nAlgonquin Township Garage B\n3702 US HIGHWAY 14\nCrystal Lake \nWe will start taking your lightly used household items and tools on Sunday\, May 29 at 2 PM. All items must be CLEAN and in working order with all their parts (cords\, battery packs\, etc). Items that sell well: toys\, sturdy furniture including yard furniture\, kitchen items especially eating utensils as well as plates and bowls\, and pots & pans and anything for the yard. \nSorry\, but we cannot take: clothing\, stuffed animals\, kitchen appliances that are not clean throughout\, non-working small appliances or toys\, large appliances\, TVs\, monitors or computers and large exercise equipment. \nPlease be thoughtful when choosing your items for donation and remember we may have to take the items home if they don’t sell for disposal so we may ask you to leave your phone number for pick up if it doesn’t sell. \nDonation Drop-off Dates: \nSunday\, June 2 – 2 PM – 4 PM & Monday\, June 3 through Wednesday\, June 5 – 10 AM to 3 PM \nSale Dates: \nWe are having the sale two weekends this year! \nThursday\, June 6 through Saturday June 8 – 9 AM to 4 PM \nThursday\, June 13 through Saturday June 15 – 9 AM to 4 PM \nTo volunteer at this event\, please use this link: https://signup.com/go/gfWVeRq

Through 2033\, federal and state incentives can help homeowners and renters cut their energy footprints and save money.\n\nThe Defenders is hosting free informational sessions on the tax credits and rebates available to residents for improving the energy efficiency of their homes and switching their appliances and cars to electricity. Staff from the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) lead the sessions.\n\nThe next in-person session will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at Lake in the Hills Village Hall.\n\nDon’t have time to make it to an in-person session? DESCRIPTION:Every year the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County teams up with the McHenry County Department of Health to put on several recycling events throughout the year. \nAt this event there will be: \nElectronics Recycling \nStyrofoam\, textiles\, light bulbs($)\, batteries($) \n \nElgin Recycling will be accepting the following electronic devices:\n• Televisions & Computer Monitors ($) Credit cards and cash will be accepted onsite.\n• Computers & Small Scale Servers\n• Printers\, FAX Machines and Scanners\n• DVD Players\, DVD Recorders and VCR’s\n• Video Game Consoles\n• Digital Converter Boxes\, Cable and Satellite Receivers\n• Electronic Keyboards\, Electronic Mice and Portable Digital Music Players \nFees for TVs and Monitors:\n$15 for any size LCD monitor\n$25 for all other units up to 20 inches\n$35 for all other units 21 inches and Larger \nIf you are unable to attend one of the collection event dates\, Elgin Recycling has a permanent site at 5114 E Terra Cotta (Route176) in Crystal Lake (Across from Country Side Flower Shop).\nOpen Monday- Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 8:00am to 1:00pm.\nFor additional information or questions regarding electronics recycling please visit\nElgin Recycling’s website at www.elginrecycling.com or contact them at 847-741-4100.\nElgin Recycling will no longer be accepting any type of batteries at the events\, but will continue to accept them at their Crystal Lake location. \n \nBatteries‒ Household (A\, C\, D\, AA\, AAA\, Lithium\, Ni-Cad\, Button and NI-MH) are accepted for $1.00 per pound\, which only covers our costs to get them recycled. Lead batteries (car\, motorcycle\, sump pump\, marine) are accepted at no charge. \nFluorescent Light Bulbs–The following are accepted for a fee\, which only covers our costs to get them recycled: \n4-foot\, $.50 each; \n8-foot\, $1.00 each; \nCompact bulbs used in lamps and lighting fixtures\, $.50 each \nPacking Peanuts that are clean\, dry\, in a box or bag\, are accepted. \nSolid Styrofoam is accepted at no charge providing it is clean\, with no glue\, tape\, food or anything else attached to it.  Soft material that bends and is generally used in packaging is not accepted.  If it has a smooth cover (usually blue or pink in color) on it\, it is not accepted. \nTextiles–Clothes\, blankets\, towels\, shoes\, etc.\, with holes\, worn out\, torn\, accepted at no charge\, BUT they must be clean. \nFor additional information or questions regarding the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County please contact us at 815-338-0393.
