SUMMARY:Make a Difference Day: Triangle Prairie Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Make a Difference Day 2023 \nSaturday\, October 28\, 9 – 11 a.m. \nTriangle Prairie \nCorner of Hwy 14 and Lake Avenue in Woodstock \nMake a Difference Day is celebrated annually in October. If you have ever wondered if your actions can make a difference\, the answer is “Yes”!  We have taken part in this day of service for many years by organizing volunteers to help remove invasives and collect trash at one of the prairies that we manage in order to improve habitat for native plant and animal species. \nOn Saturday\, October 28\, you are invited to “make a difference” by helping with restoration efforts at Triangle Prairie on the corner of Hwy 14 and Lake Avenue in Woodstock as part of the national “Make A Difference Day” celebration.  In addition to cutting resprouts from our workdays last winter\, we’ll also be collecting trash throughout the site.  And if weather conditions permit\, we’ll burn some piles of branches left over from our past workdays.  The event will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 11a.m.   \nVolunteers are asked to wear work clothes\, gloves\, and boots.  Please park in the SW corner of the Walmart parking lot and walk down to the prairie   All necessary equipment and snacks will be provided. Please bring your own water.  If you have any questions about this event\, please contact Nancy Schietzelt at buroak92@gmail.com or call the office at 815-338-0393.  Come help us make a positive difference in our environment and enjoy some time outdoors!

SUMMARY:Soul Jam at Soulful Prairies with Defenders and MCCD as Beneficiaries
DESCRIPTION:Soul Jam takes many of the things we are passionate about and rolls them into one event. A day of good music\, good people and always supporting a good cause.\n\nEach year we choose a different local cause as the recipient of our proceeds. We offer a nice line up of about ten local bands some of whom we hire and some of whom donate their time. Food is available for sale and people are also allowed to bring coolers of food and beverages. Groups of people set up chairs and tables on the lawn and settle in to enjoy the day. Wandering the farm and meeting the animals\, and catching up with friends are among a few of the possibilities. \n\n \nThis year\, The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County\, the McHenry County Conservation District and Good Food Pantry will be the beneficiaries this year! \n‍Environmental Defenders & McHenry County Conservation District\nFounded in 1970\, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County is a grass-roots organization dedicated to preserving\, protecting and educating about the environment. Learn more about this organization. \nFounded in 1971\, McHenry County Conservation District protects over 25\,750 acres of open space that support thriving native plants and wildlife populations\, diverse outdoor recreation\, and a myriad of educational and immersive experiences. Learn more about this organization. \nGood Food Pantry\nThe Good Food Pantry was established in 2022 in memory of David Gooding\, a long-time resident of Park Ridge\, IL\, who worked in the food industry his entire career. His family began the pantry to help the less fortunate members of the local communities who are struggling with food insecurity. GFP utilizes social media to collect non-perishable food based on what is low on local food pantries shelves to make sure individuals and families are getting the type of food that they need.

SUMMARY:Float the Fox with The Defenders and Paddle On! Outfitters\, Inc.
DESCRIPTION:With special guest Gary Swick from Friends of the Fox River \n  \nWhen: Saturday\, July 30\, 10AM \nWhere: meet at Voyageur Landing Forest Preserve at 50 Airport Rd. in Elgin to leave autos and Paddle On will shuttle us up to the boats. (They’ll shuttle you and your boat if you’re bringing your own.)   \nHow: order your kayak and shuttle through Paddle On! Outfitters (see URL below) or just a shuttle if you have your own boat/s.  \nStretch: Buffalo Park\, Algonquin to Voyageur Landing\, Elgin – about an eight-mile journey. \nSIGN UP at www.paddleonoutfitters.com – 815-762-4009 \nThis trip is on one of the nicest natural stretches of the Fox River\, as it is dominated by Kane County Forest Preserve property. It will truly be unique in many ways. It will be an opportunity not only to appreciate the beautiful Fox River and its abundant bird life. This may be your last opportunity to paddle the Carpentersville dam’s impoundment as the dam is scheduled for removal this fall.  This may also be your last time to portage (woohoo!) and when we do\, we’ll be met by Gary Swick\, President of Friends of the Fox River.  Gary will discuss the dam’s history and benefits of its removal for restoring the health of the Fox River. We’ll also stop for lunch at Rosie O’Hares in East Dundee right along the river. Expect an approximate 5-hour day with dam removal talk and lunch.    \nQuestions? Contact trip guide\, Cynthia Kanner\, at defendersdirector@gmail.com.
