SUMMARY:Make a Difference Day: Triangle Prairie Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Make a Difference Day 2023 \nSaturday\, October 28\, 9 – 11 a.m. \nTriangle Prairie \nCorner of Hwy 14 and Lake Avenue in Woodstock \nMake a Difference Day is celebrated annually in October. If you have ever wondered if your actions can make a difference\, the answer is “Yes”!  We have taken part in this day of service for many years by organizing volunteers to help remove invasives and collect trash at one of the prairies that we manage in order to improve habitat for native plant and animal species. \nOn Saturday\, October 28\, you are invited to “make a difference” by helping with restoration efforts at Triangle Prairie on the corner of Hwy 14 and Lake Avenue in Woodstock as part of the national “Make A Difference Day” celebration.  In addition to cutting resprouts from our workdays last winter\, we’ll also be collecting trash throughout the site.  And if weather conditions permit\, we’ll burn some piles of branches left over from our past workdays.  The event will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 11a.m.   \nVolunteers are asked to wear work clothes\, gloves\, and boots.  Please park in the SW corner of the Walmart parking lot and walk down to the prairie   All necessary equipment and snacks will be provided. Please bring your own water.  If you have any questions about this event\, please contact Nancy Schietzelt at buroak92@gmail.com or call the office at 815-338-0393.  Come help us make a positive difference in our environment and enjoy some time outdoors!

SUMMARY:BMP Talk & Tour: Green Infrastructure for Flood Mitigation
DESCRIPTION:Like many cities throughout the country\, Crystal Lake is learning to adapt to increased flooding in our communities. This program will demonstrate how green infrastructure and native vegetation can be used to effectively mitigate flooding in urbanized areas while providing a multitude of additional benefits. \nThe program will be led by staff from Crystal Lake Public Works who have been directly involved in addressing flood issues. We will meet at the Crystal Lake City Hall for a brief presentation and then travel by bus for guided tours at three green infrastructure projects. \nThe tours will showcase a naturalized regional detention system in a neighborhood that had experienced frequent flooding\, a bioswale that provides erosion control and filters runoff before it flows into Crystal Lake\, and a network of constructed wetlands that provide much needed flood relief in an older residential community prone to flooding. \nThis tour is limited to 25 guests\, so register quickly to secure your spot! \n\nTo register\, please RSVP at https://tinyurl.com/BMPTourSignup or email Scott Kuykendall\, McHenry County Water Resources Specialist at SHKuykendall@mchenrycountyil.gov\n\nThese popular Talk and Tour programs showcase Best Management Practices successfully implemented in McHenry County. The programs are a collaborative effort with the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development.\nFor more information on how you can help protect McHenry County’s natural resources visit the Defenders website https://mcdef.org/.
