SUMMARY:BMP Talk & Tour: Smart Infrastructure Management
DESCRIPTION:As material and labor costs continue to rise\, it is increasingly important to manage infrastructure and other assets as efficiently as possible. CityWorks is an easy to use GIS-based asset management system that helps organizations better manage their operations and infrastructure. The Village of Algonquin has been using CityWorks for over six years and have effectively incorporated it into their day to day operations. This includes paperless service requests from the public and work order generation\, managing stormwater and public open space\, and maintaining public infrastructure. Michelle Zimmerman\, Deputy Director for Algonquin Public Works\, will show us how the Village has used CityWorks to significantly reduce costs\, improve efficiency\, streamline maintenance\, and improve service.\n\nAbout Best Management Practices Talks & Tours:\nBeginning in 2022\, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County’s Water & Natural Resources Protection Action Team and the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development are hosting Friday BMP Talks and Tours* that showcase some of the exciting Best Management Practices (BMPs)* being implemented in McHenry County. Links to videos of most of the 2022 & 2023 Talks and Tours can be found in the table below. We are looking forward to hosting this program again in 2024 during the months of April to November.\n*The term ‘Best Management Practices’\, or BMPs\, was coined as a way to describe state-of-the-art practices implemented to protect and maintain the integrity of nature resources and promote conservation of land\, water and energy. A BMP can be a structural “thing” that you actually install on the ground. Examples include stormwater treatment trains\, rain gardens\, energy-saving buildings\, etc. A BMP can also be part of the “process” that you use to plan\, design\, construct and conduct your operations. Examples include energy conservation measures\, conservation design for developments and practices such as sensible road salting programs.\n\nThe events are held on Friday afternoons\, to make attending them convenient for staff of municipalities\, townships\, school districts\, park districts\, libraries\, schools and churches\, as well as the general public.\n\nTo improve the resiliency of our communities and sustainably manage resources\, it is becoming increasingly important to implement the BMPs showcased in these workshops. Join us to see these inspiring projects in action and learn from the experts how they can be successfully implemented in your communities. Learn how you can save money and resources for your communities or facilities by implementing these best management practices.\nTo be added to the email list for this series\, please fill out the form at https://tinyurl.com/BMPTourSignup

SUMMARY:Salt Smart BMP Talk & Tour
DESCRIPTION:Salt Smart Training for Parking Lots and Sidewalks\nTuesday\, October 24\, 2023\n8:00 AM to 1:00 PM\n\nRingers Landscaping\n2101 IL – Route 176\nCrystal Lake\, IL 60014\n\nThe excessive use of road salt is polluting the water resources we all depend on. Salt Smart practices help maintain safety while reducing pollution and saving money. The exciting new Salt Smart Certified training program teaches snow and ice management professionals how to use industry-proven Salt Smart practices that maintain safety on parking lots and sidewalks while reducing pollution and saving money. The Salt Smart Certified training is designed for management staff from organizations like private contractors\, businesses\, park districts\, school districts\, public libraries\, municipalities\, or others who maintain parking lots and sidewalks during the winter. Salt Smart Certified was developed for Illinois by the Smart Salt Collaborative\, a program of the Conservation Foundation\, and a steering committee of professionals with funding from a grant by the Illinois EPA. Individuals who attend this training program and pass the evaluation will be recognized as Salt Smart Trained for three years. Organizations with Smart Salt Trained staff can choose to register as Salt Smart Certified. Visit saltsmart.org/certified for more information.\n\nThis program includes a tour of the brine making facility and equipment that Ringers Landscaping uses to successfully (and profitably) implement Salt Smart practices in their winter operations.\n\nThere is a $25 registration fee for this program that covers the cost for instruction\, training materials\, snacks\, and beverages.\nREGISTER HERE: https://www.mchenrycountyil.gov/…/salt-smart-talk-and…\n\nContact Scott Kuykendall\, McHenry County Water Resources Specialist\, if you have questions or need additional information.\nSHKuykendall@mchenrycountyil.gov\n\nThese popular Talk and Tour programs showcase best management practices that have been successfully implemented in McHenry County.\n\nThe programs are a collaborative effort between the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County and the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development.

SUMMARY:BMP: Now is the Time to use SmartSalt Practices
DESCRIPTION:The excessive use of roadsalt for deicing in winter\, particularly on parking lots and sidewalks\, is polluting the drinking water we all rely on for life and economic opportunity. Fortunately\, with Salt Smart practices we can maintain safety while eliminating the excess application of salt that is commonly used today.\n\nRingers Landscaping produces their own liquid brine that is applied to pavements before a snowstorm using a practice called “anti-icing”. The liquid brine prevents ice from forming\, which improves the contractors ability to remove snow and effectively maintain bare pavement while only applying a fraction of the salt used in more conventional practices.\n\nWe will also learn about the new Salt Smart Training and Certification program that has been developed by the Conservation Foundation for the state of Illinois. This exciting new training and certification program is designed to help successfully implement Salt Smart practices into your business\, facility\, or community. The time to start using Smart Salting practices is now and the new Salt Smart Training and Certification program will help you every step of the way.\nThis program will start with a guided tour of the Ringers Landscaping facility\, including demonstrations on how their brine is made\, stored\, and used on parking lots and sidewalks.\n\nIt will showcase how Ringers Landscaping\, a local business\, has successfully and profitably integrated Salt Smart practices into their winter operations and business model.\n\nSign up to attend here: https://tinyurl.com/BMPTourSignup

SUMMARY:Best Management Practices Talk and Tour: How To Successfully Manage Natural Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 22 — From 1 to 3 PM \nEvent is free & open to the public but limited to 30 people \nMeet at Ted Spella Park in Algonquin \nInfrastructure and landscaping that use native vegetation helps to manage stormwater and reduce flooding while also recharging groundwater\, purifying water\, providing habitat\, and creating natural beauty. \nThe use of native vegetation and other forms of green infrastructure are powerful tools to improve resiliency of our communities. While landscaping with native vegetation is not rocket science\, most conventional landscapers do not have the knowledge or skills to successfully install or maintain these systems. When properly implemented by qualified professionals\, natural landscaping can also reduce annual operating costs over conventional landscaping and provide benefits for generations to come. \n· Michele Zimmerman\, Assistant Public Works Director for the Village of Algonquin\, will showcase the natural landscaping systems and best management practices that have been successfully installed at Spella Park.  Michelle will also discuss how the Village uses contracts and performance standards to successfully implement projects throughout the Village. The examples will include detailed information demonstrating the economic benefits. \n· The Village’s ecological contractor\, Resource Environmental Solutions (RES)\, will provide technical guidance on how to properly establish and maintain natural landscaping. This is a great opportunity to learn directly from experts. \nJoin us to see firsthand how these incredible best management practices can be implemented in your communities! Bring your water bottle and be prepared to walk through the park. \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease register here for this Talk & Tour. This will help us plan refreshments for the event. \nThis is the fourth in the series of Friday Talks and Tours scheduled by the EDMC’s Water & Natural Resources Protection Action Team and the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development that showcase some of the exciting Best Management Practices (BMPs) being implemented in McHenry County. \nClick here for the evolving schedule of planned Friday BMP Talks and Tours.
