Reducing waste is an important task for the environment, and local businesses can make a big impact by implementing composting programs. To encourage this effort, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County are launching the “Race to Reduce Waste” promotion, which runs from April 20th to May 20th, 2023.

During this time, guests who dine at participating restaurants will have the opportunity to win a $100 gift certificate to their favorite business by entering a raffle. The more you dine, the more chances you have to win! To enter, simply scan the unique QR code at each restaurant and fill out the form. If you’re having trouble finding the QR code, just ask your server.

The participating restaurants include Crystal Lake Brewing, Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen, Conscious Cup Coffee Roasters (Crystal Lake location only), Dunkin’ Donuts Crystal Lake (Crystal Lake location on Route 14 only), Julie Ann’s Frozen Custard, Cantina 52, AROMA, and UpRising Bakery and Cafe. Each of these businesses has implemented a composting program for the duration of the promotion, and they have displayed a supplied sign with their unique QR code in a prominent space within their establishment for guests to use to check in.

The first guest to visit all of the participating restaurants within the time frame will win a special gift basket featuring local products and reusable materials. It’s a great way to support local businesses and reduce waste in the community.

A very special thank you to McHenry County College and Hickory Hall Crystal Lake for signing up for our composting program without participating in the Race to reduce Waste.

To participate, businesses receive training and resources from WasteNot, and they will be supplied with educational and training materials for their team. Additionally, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County will provide signage for employees and customers, guidance for purchasing certified compostable containers and other products, press releases about the program and its participants, and advertising for the businesses to their over 3,000 followers via email and social media.

If your business would like to participate, it’s not too late to sign up! Email the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County’s Waste Reduction Action Team at WasteReductionCL@gmail.com. Let’s work together to encourage local businesses to compost and reduce waste! Don’t forget to like and follow the EDMC Waste Reduction Team page on Facebook to stay informed about future programs.

In conclusion, the “Race to Reduce Waste” promotion is a great initiative to promote sustainability and support local businesses. By dining at participating restaurants and scanning the QR code, you can help reduce waste and possibly win a $100 gift certificate to your favorite local business. Let’s join hands to make a difference!
