Join us for an informative talk on recycling as we delve into the fascinating world of sustainable practices and waste management. In this engaging presentation, we will explore various aspects of recycling, from everyday curbside collections to unique items that require special attention.
Kim Hankins, Director of Sustainability at McHenry County College and President of the Board of Directors for the Environmental Defenders, will kick off the talk by discussing the types of materials that can be easily recycled through curbside programs, focusing on mailing materials, packaging, and plastic film. We will also delve into exciting initiatives like Trex and HTR, shedding light on how these programs contribute to sustainable living. Kim will briefly touch upon the history and significance of the Green Guide.
Kelli Boeckmann, Solid Waste Manager for McHenry County Department of Health, will take the stage to explore items that don’t make it into the standard curbside bins, including medical waste, sharps, and hazardous household waste. She will discuss pending laws that could affect the disposal of these items and the importance of responsible disposal. Kelli will also explain the new laws surrounding paint disposal and the journey of these items after they leave our homes, uncovering the ‘where does it go?’ mystery. She’ll introduce us to the fascinating world of waste management robots at WM and LRS’s solid waste plan for the southside of Chicago and how it connects with McHenry County.
