Please join us for the first BMP Talk and Tour workshop of 2023!

Again this year, the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County’s Water & Natural Resources Protection Action Team and the McHenry County Department of Planning and Development are hosting Friday BMP Talks and Tours that showcase exciting Best Management Practices (BMPs) being implemented in McHenry County. The term ‘Best Management Practices’, or BMPs, was coined as a way to describe state-of-the-art practices implemented to protect and maintain the integrity of nature resources and promote conservation of land, water and energy.
Our first session of 2023 will be held as a Zoom webinar on Friday, March 17 from 1-3 pm. This session will focus on the benefits of reducing nighttime light pollution on birds and insects and our own ability to see stars at night.
We’ll hear from McHenry County Audubon President Lisa Maier about the impacts that light pollution has on wildlife.
Village of Bull Valley President Emily Berendt will walk us through the Outdoor Lighting Ordinance that her village recently adopted based on International Dark Sky Association sample ordinances. This is one of the actions that Bull Valley took in 2022 to fulfill their enrollment in the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge.
We’ll provide you with World Migratory Bird Day literature on ways to improve outdoor lighting to reduce light pollution. (Available in both English and Spanish).
To be added to the email list for this series and to receive the Zoom link for the March 17 session, please fill out the form at https://tinyurl.com/BMPTourSignup. Videos of past Talks and Tours can be found at tinyurl.com/FridayBMPTours, and we are updating our 2023 schedule there as we finalize our plans for upcoming sessions.
