Environmental Defenders of McHenry County Committees

Climate Change Committee ~ Call the office if you are interested in participating.

Education Committee ~ Conducts workshops on various environmental topics and develops educational materials for public outreach. Sponsors Full Moon Theatre series and Earth Day. Meets the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm at the office.

Fundraising Committee ~ Holds special fundraising events including annual Garage Sales, Used Book Sales, and Pioneer Farm Christmas Tree Sales. Meets the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30 pm at the office. 

Land Use Planning Committee ~ Researches and conducts programs to involve citizens in local planning, zoning and transportation issues, and controlling suburban sprawl. Meets as necessary.

Membership Committee ~ Develops and implements strategies for increasing membership, visibility and membership retention. Plans and organizes membership and volunteer events/services, such as the Annual Meeting, Corn Roast, and Defenders’ Month.  Luncheon meeting at noon on the first Wednesday of the month. Meet at the office, then on to a local restaurant.

Natural Resources Preservation Committee ~ Researches and implements programs on topics such as conservation of soil and wildlife habitat, protection of greenways, and public open space. Sponsors restoration of the Defenders' property. Meets as needed. 

New Home Committee ~ Works towards our goal of constructing a sustainable environmental center illustrating green building techniques. Oversees building fundraising. Meets as needed. 

Waste Reduction Committee ~ Works to stop waste of energy and natural resources by promoting recycling, waste reduction education, and demonstrating alternatives to wasteful lifestyles. Sponsors monthly recycling drives and limited commercial pick-ups. Works often, meets as needed.

Water Resources Protection Committee ~ Develops policies and programs to protect the county’s groundwater, wetlands, rivers, lakes, and streams from pollution by urban and agricultural runoff, toxic chemicals, and gravel mining operations. Sponsors the Friends of the Kishwaukee and Friends of the Nippersink projects. Meets the fourth Wednesday of the month at 7pm at the office.
