EDMC owns a beautiful piece of open land on Dean Street in Woodstock, adjacent to MCCD’s Kishwaukee Headwaters. (Click here to read MCCD’s description of the site.)
The original vision for the site was to build a state-of-the-art green building to house our offices, educational work, resale shop, and recycling center.
As things changed over the years, we changed our vision. Many members thought that erecting a new building, no matter how green, on currently open space was really not what the Defenders stand for. The recycling center was closed, and a resale shop in such an out-of-the-way spot would not do well.
Instead of a building, we planted a circle of oaks around a fire pit and picnic tables, where we hold member events a few times a year. We have entertained other possibilities for the site, such as a community garden or solar farm, but for now we are content with our bit of nature.
